GUEST:

Sergeant Mike McGrew is a 31-year police veteran, and founder of 911 AEI and the At Ease Program, a rapidly growing and cutting-edge service providing confidential counseling and other healing services to first responders no cost.

Sergeant McGrew conceptualized and brought the At Ease Program to life, after seeing first-hand the desperate need within the law enforcement and first responder community, where the rates of alcoholism, divorce, and suicide continue to rise.

The goal of the At Ease program is to encourage men and women in the life-saving professions, to also take care of themselves and obtain the necessary tools to deal with the intense stressors of the job so that they can be their best for their families, friends, and the communities they serve.

Mike faced his own struggles with post-traumatic stress injuries and other self-destructive behaviors, after years of dealing with the gruesome, and at times, inhuman crimes he encountered while working as a police officer. He also experienced the unbearable pain of losing a child to cancer. You can read more about Mike by visiting his website.

First, I wanted to say happy Fourth of July happy birthday America. We also enjoy the sun and brown. He's read. I show you my faith guided the good we made a joke.

I only look like a minority when exposed to the sun well you over to the minority suffering. By the way, in the human spirit. The will to survive and the courage to keep moving forward despite any obstacle with the help of God, of course, any chapter provide testimonials to let people know as well as experts and inspirational speakers that can also help indicia the testimony started with me having been a survivor of child abuse well and I do believe are all suffering and we hope to be a source of healing for each other.

My care was God, but other forms of healing percent that as well to service everyone.

This is a healing shell life can be challenging.

There's always someone who cares. There's always hope. In this we would like you, this only played earlier was behind lies a police tribute by Odyssey officer. How often do we set our feelings and perceptions aside and consider the other side. What it's like to be a bad man to be a sad man behind relentless lies to be the one hated even though you think that guy some of us are familiar with these feelings which help us understand that no one knew it better than Jesus. It was so important that forgiving each other is mentioned in the our father. The single most important prayer that exists forgiveness promotes unconditional love. When God opens our hearts when love is pensions. It's very lonely and never freeze we will stop giving our heroes as villains when we come to understand that they are human, wholesome, and today we hope to shed a light that direction. As we discussed the untold stories behind the seat. The heroes of 911, saving our lives. There are amazing people behind them.

On one the people who keep us safe and our guest today is one of the most amazing people. Those who help helpers. Sgt. Mike McGrew, Sgt. McGreal is a 31-year-old and 34 year veteran cop president of the police officers Association and the founder of East program as he realized the desperate need for law enforcement and first responders community for emotional and psychological support Sgt. McGrew's life is depicted in the book a higher call to duty Sgt. Yarnell live welcome to the care Sgt. you have seen.

Unfortunately, firsthand what a hard job can do the police officers and first responders rates of alcoholism going higher divorces, suicides, your thoughts work you reveal what other people have to go through 35 years ago partner a bit more about were good right Bill. Very senior officers do so.

Job go out and do the best you can look up the culture that was not helping first responders to reduce stigma that to reach out to get you all of the league would do so figuratively losing their job or stigma that they couldn't handle the job and so what help you all out this profession which is riddled with suicide by group.

By the divorce rate is very high substance abuse problem. Well, one night when an obscure wanted to reach out. There was there was a big hurdle in a big barrier that kept people from reaching out and I was usually because they have filtered a box that they were not doing think you the dead child out of greed yesterday really must be up on lock but David says Laura great your bad you're gonna go sit over there babe. You'll get your job back and so as I went through my career, I worked 31 years. The most amazing grade.

This all men and women of character. People go out there lives on the line at their hearts on the disguise described for how hard this job could be. Can you tell us about your first day on the job well.

One of the first and out to me field training officer and I was with a partner and I got a call that man's motion window and we went to State Street with boot which is a very busy state Street here in Santa Barbara on Sunday at the visitor destination folder about the people out on the street and when I arrived there were and you would attack the people is normal through things on the street so I partner and I personnel the harm's way distract the person on the resume.

If you go out on the street that it was a legal situation because man was trying to kill us was trying to go after other people, but there was not a shot that could take because of the danger that I would other people to them so as we went down the street. We we put him between each other and basically guarded the. The people in the cars that were stopped going northbound on State Street new people on the sidewalk. One point my partner fell over backwards and I knew at that point that on the suspect was coming down with the sword on the partner that all you have to kill this man and so everything in slow motion on the trigger and I was yelling at the guy and for some reason this turned around and focus back on me but I didn't have to shoot was one of one of the pond word legal force could've been used several times in my career, but we were able to marching down the street. He actually was hit by a police car).

Moreover, to prevent him from hurting somebody else got back up, grabbed the sword government made something to him, but I was just the start of my career line I was going yeah I remember going on and you know you can't really tell your family exactly what happened really hard to describe the emotions that I went through that day, but I just remember going then I naturally threw up.

That was the reaction though and then the from there on just what you did to describe suck it up. The problem have to first responders. I will begin to isolate and as a come home and they have on the deal with situations that you would even want to tell your neighbor about all your family about, but what happened to the district isolate you don't talk to anybody else restate. That's why I think these are the untold stories.

It's not what we see on TV.

It's not what we learned in school. It's what deceivers have to endure silently and it's it's it's a wonderful thing that were able to help people understand that it's a very difficult job to work in danger in order to save others also placing your own life at risk and know they will share with your father and I just particular that into perspective. We will continue talking with Sgt. Mike McGrew is helping us divulge the hard work of our first responders. Please stay with the lid left him 866 30 flexion wife can bring many difficult situations, domestic violence, addictions, poverty and even sexual abuse by your loved ones. The issue is not stay there, but to overcome all obstacles and show that with the love of God, your husband and your family. You can succeed. Love is the answer. God is the key word reveals baby combos life, a warrior who didn't give up and achieve the dream of her life. You can get to know more about her at her story on God is the key word.com or buying her book on Amazon.com and welcome back then you can know things pertaining remember that you can listen to the radio show life throughout up the cure or later is about customer for life will also social media channels sound that displayed is difficult for class was officer Tim Nyhan Anis. I cannot imagine losing someone that I love in my life, but it's a daily reality. When it comes to our police officers and firefighters in order to save others to misstate and conquer danger in shark infested waters. They call this their duty. I consider it divine Providence, but there is no greater love and is willing to risk their lives to help us change God bless the families of this officers town.

We are talking to Sgt. Mike McGrane about the meeting job and her first responders. Sgt., have you lost a police officer are collated in online dating, perhaps at a time that the force should have been used, but why thanks in the outcome was pretty sad, hurt the entire profession I've been a role police officer funeral limited to ramming the watch friend to suicide because of the weight of the job you the toll that that this profession can take on a person because police officers are people that are going to this job because of the calling there called to go serve there called the go protect your called put themselves in harm's way and ending we expect nothing other than notice the support of our community. At times when it's really needed on this really coordinates. Not that we always get that thing most under your people don't support you but the final majority is out there and there there there very supportive of that.

And that's what started the 911 international program that began before eight. I retired and got it on my heart to the breaking tightly healing to the fellow officers in the fellow first responders that I worked with and night I prayed about the barrier that kept people from getting help much needed help that can be very useful and and through prayer came up with a program where the raise money for the community and an officer or first responders able to call number that is not related to the work is not related to the AP program or anything else very confidential, and then they can be hooked up with a, trying counselor immediately and their and their officers we take in all the red tape out of it made it very easy for people to go on get to help them stay resilient. We started that one agency hearing central California and it grew and grew and grew throughout three counting and now we are taking this program across the country right now because the demand is so great, the pressures on the first responders that the increase. Everything that that you see on the mainstream media times the negative things that come again. The people that are out there doing a great job that affects them extra family, the very article way and have the help of the testimonies are just unbelievable people are saying that programs help save their lives to save their marriage if there job on were keeping people resiliently were keeping our first responder strong so that they can be their best for the community that Victor and image of the biblical formula supported by the belt and and people really part of it sport the first responder is just very meaningful is changing the culture of first responders were located reach out and on to talk to somebody dated difficult the board through on issues that they may encounter on the job offer me I'm on the map they still God.

God was here. I didn't know the Lord and I tried to do everything on my own on and on my own strength until I got to a place that I couldn't. My my youngest son was diagnosed with cancer, milder study involving drug addiction my life to you.

Marriage is no these are audited, compiled with the stress in the work of you in a place where I can only look up and was at that time that I the Lord and God give you strength that that I can getting nickel itself might my younger son to die the pictures after the battle, but night I saw how the Lord is so gentle with me, and now he was so present before is ever a believer, I would go to the worst called by the be the worst thing that people can imagine an but I would always do something powerful that with all the and it would be the strength of the sexual assault survivor to standing up with tasty virtues, or it could be a community coming around the family and the coming together during a disaster and that was the thing that always get me coming back. Police work on because without that I wouldn't conduct that is so much for your work education send the longest success played a big role in your in your job well when he gets really difficult and nothing else will work. When we realize no one without God we can surely be healed. The tell me about you have had chops as a whole states negotiation.

That's a whole different room, but I like to see community support behind these first responders and first officers in the best way to understand that since we haven't walked in their shoes is to understand where they're coming from, to hear their stories and this is hopefully a return.

We would love for you to talk about this without another in one many tell us something about it or interesting story. It about.

Yes, you are not negotiation team. There were several cases that that I was called out to 100 that outward woman who shot at another person in town and she was she going to different towns around and through committee to create violent crimes and I was looking for her and radio station called that covers five state and pretty things of radio personality and they said hey are you talking about linguine 10 is statement left. Tell us about an element when you finish police to get experiences first responders lecturing, and an existing list of things and in the changing ways. It means expanding savings to see any fencing in the 1990 welcome back and things picking and Amy And Boris. But anyway, post holes are available also as a video podcast just look for the cure place where up at Casa song that just played last Easter patina from line another police Chevy by Odyssey. Nothing on the topic and gets sleight-of-hand when we don't understand when lies are considered facts that damage that's done. It's hard to take. No one wants to take the place of business treated in ways they don't deserve indemnified get officers out to serve and protect.

Nonetheless, place their lives in danger and be willing to take a bullet for stranger.

It takes being tough and brave.

Even when it's never enough. Their days are hard and nights are long.

Still, day after day they protect you from talking to Sgt. Nightingale about the work of the first responders Sgt. before he went to break. We are talking about when you are a hostage negotiator of crazy rumors going around. I guess killing people said by clients but I didn't know which ones and what it out. Radio show called me at station a are you looking and will recover and why it will be me a favor. People thought their Dr. and what ended up happening was that they put it on their and spent several hours that my three following night talking to this woman as she confessed to different crimes, one being a homicide will and that was the it was broadcast over over five state and each night, we knew that she would calling to the to the host and we did our best to bring your hand but it ended up where she ended up committing suicide on during one of the show. She should brandish a gun to another person stopped by the police and ended up on were she she died so it was noted that the movies don't always show you everything that happened in real life as the positive negotiator, you do your best to calm situation down, calm people down, but on but there still a factor that you don't have control over you. Those that that something not result peacefully, but again not one of many other incidents that I've been involved in line.

Also called to assist with the woman that was trying to commit suicide. Suicide, yet you whole book away story society, and there's a lot of so what is the name of the book called a higher call to duty goes over my life, my journey a good police officer, but also person going through all the difficult part of the together talking about on the show and the life of the child.

The addiction of a loved one the way, how the loss of the child and still a believer I have to come and she said that not everybody takes that route. Sometimes they blame God instead of Satan.

Thank you for You when he was diagnosed. I didn't know the Lord appeared in to the jury that I came to the Lord and I could see how God was the so gentle with me during that process and after my son died until God. I don't want to go to work toward Harmon. I forgot I don't want to go to another dead child call. I don't go film a family member that they lost a loved one and they take about a month… My son died when I came back.

Those are all the called and you that's a good month else about the yeah and I I I would stand there on the doorstep of these families and they could see the payment they knew that I knew there and my heart is broken wide open and they would look at me and they would they of you survived it up to you to still be standing and the only thing I could do was quite the God and talk about the strength that God gave me peace that God gave me and the and it was a great place to witness about God's love out. He is still present evening inquiry you think works are taken or not, is there is there in a way that is so powerful and so I realized that my as I went out in the cop by the was in behind them all.

More about this being a man. Empathy a manacle of man without a calling to protect others, but… Really important to me that I could share God grace in my life with other people is that they may not know you should you should but they will listen to our story and our testimony are powerful and stinky. Some nights can we talk about the solar cycle. Yet you want want to remind me which one I think was the one that you were cold on suicide. When the committed suicide, but then something miraculously happens to the regular running guy would God began. The issue became a believer I prayed a lot the student be connected and God began showing me a lot of thing and he works miracles and and in this case or the woman who was 23 years old and got called by the subjects of Louisiana over to her ouster to officers that were there I was the patrol's argument and they were calling me because the map to kick the door ended to get access to work in the confined and and as I showed up Dr. downturn. She was denied a garage bedecked garage on clubhouse and she had on herself and the raptor and so we cut her down and she was dead. She'd probably be dead. 25 minutes at least eyes were fixed and dilated to little to the ligature marks around her neck, which pretty evaluation reduced no, I I've been delighted called were likely gives TP argue they gathered their cancer, but this was not one of cases we did call the fire department in the paramedic showed up and and as I was standing over God talk to me about a resurrection about two months ago and I didn't really understand, but that very moment, God said, I want you to pray over this Grail and so with the police and firefighter standing around. I knelt down and I grabbed a hold of her foot because they were working in depression and in a distorted praying that same feeling that you get when you worship the same feeling as the Holy Spirit's presence and as I was praying for about 10 minutes. I looked up and I thought her eyes." And then one of the firefighter jumped back 52 got all the next firefighter jump back and that she's got blood pressure and they work rated transporter is that they did and they just started the scurrying giver loaded up and start breaking God brought her back down the building and to die is incredible is impossible.

Still bringing online spunk who are dad physically, emotionally, and steerage.

Thank you for sharing.
