You have lots great to have you on Rick and yeah was joking before he went on there. I guess I'll might throw you under the bus euro for minute, but it just I had your number but somehow somehow it ended up being your sisters number who then almost gave me your debt. What did give me your dad's number. But that said wait.

You try to get all of my data my brother because they're both reckon I'm like well who's the wrestling fetches all that would be my brother so apparently it left an impression upon your sister.

Oh yeah they know actually paid for through it with me. We were in North Carolina back in 2002 Iran and I my grandfather was a quadruple bypass and we were at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. I think one of the hospital on the East Coast for cardiac and we were in the café and lo and behold there live in cholos and there was wife and I looked over for about five in cholos and she looked at him and she says that it sure is that we went over and introduced ourselves and the kind enough to get the talking for about 10 minutes and just a great great guy, great, great gentleman.

He was see you got the opportunity meet all go live on. I did you know it courses my moniker was the Russian bearing because back in the wrestling days you carried a much different different persona that then he did that.

Perhaps you know when when you met him there and in 2002.

Although he still would have been. I mean, he was active, which you probably know or maybe you don't put uncle I was active in in the ring really up until just just a few years before his passing before he went home to be with the Lord. I mean, it was nice to look at to go Ivan retire.I mean, his body was so beaten up from you from all that fake wrestling rack all you guys take a pounding. Over the years and you know it definitely had the you know the funny thing about that. My uncle, my mile lived in Greenville. He dabbled in Amway back in the late 80s and he had gotten it got me the autograph so I'm in cholos and called you Mr. not number one. Paul Jones after he met both of them and told them what a wrestling fan. I was got there autograph for me and sent them down to me in a Christmas card one year I live in Charleston South Carolina little bit away so just just been a lifelong fan of wrestling. That's that's awesome and I know christen upon you, Paul and Ivan were were involved in that business. So over the years and and I by the way, I'm a fan of Charleston. I love just like for real. I like I'm on the history guy love history and so I am a real fan of Charles look on the tours. The carriage rides Rick, the carriage rides there in the downtown Charleston was visiting some of the historical places there in Charleston. I just love it is. I love your city never felt the need to leave here. I grew up on James Island barrier island about five minute Folly Beach, Charleston, and used to frequent out out quite a bit back I work downtown for about four and half years). The historical district, for I am embarking on my current career and now I live in Goose Creek which is about 15 miles northwest of Charleston so only coming to think Charleston recent tax if it's one of the greatest cities are and you don't hear Goose Creek and have no desire to be anywhere else. It is a great place to live and he said it is very rich in history and you not tell my kids all the time. You know you can go on vacation anywhere in the world are probably going to get more of a snorkel impact here than you will anywhere else. Yeah it is interesting that idea how many people you talk to. That's a great perspective you have is only people you talk to that that live in the city that that that has a variety type of history or what were arts entertainment center Re: arts and culture. Museums are just a number of different things you say have you ever been the such a such weather like no I never have been there their whole life writing the people traveling to the city just to go there and and yet they've never been like, like I want that comes to mind is the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte right like I mean how many people live in Charlotte. Their whole life and in never gone to the Billy Graham Library just as an example, one example right such a great perspective. You have know how many company kids. Rick, you have. We have three stepson who just turned 23 and I have a 14-year-old thought of a 12-year-old daughter Lawson 14 1214 and 23 and some great advice you've given them while learning to love the city you're living in right after the fact we go to Myrtle Beach once a year for our anniversary. July and wheat we did vacation up in Charlotte. I think three years ago we went to the great Wolf Lodge up that way yeah company sales got I don't think that was far from the Billy Graham Library. I think I remember seeing signs or private room. That's definitely on the bucket with be able to get up that way again to check that library out before my time here is up job do you do it, do Rick to send just the list is out to maybe not familiar with with the here building a library they think and all yeah now I'm not really in the library thing and I don't even have a library card not done on a noise fit.

It's not. They call it the applet.

It's a walk-through history talk about history itself. Phenomenal is actually one of the most amazing walk-through history that I've ever experienced. I did with my dad.

The very first time of of the life of Billy Graham.

It's all from start to finish his life story and people are blown away when they see that presentations kind of a self-guided presentation in and in and so I recommend anybody you sits on the bucket list. You know, yeah, make a point of doing that, you know, you get to Charlotte or anyone else listening to this that's coming through Charlotte making a trip to Charlotte go to the Billy Graham Library. You will not be disappointed that's that's really really cool and and so you know the she been a wrestling fan for for many, many mirrors. As far back as so how long can you remember what how far back to go Rick. Well, if it's a funny story I was turned on my TV set one Saturday morning that probably 1985 and who were the first people I see on TV as Ivan and Nikita Khrushchev and they were they were doing a replay. I think the Russians would just drop the world pack title to the rock 'n' roll express a little town called Shelby, North Carolina. You look good. Yes, I remember seeing Ivan a crusher and I remember seeing you. For the first time I remember thinking I want to be built just like that guy right there placing all you you didn't.

What's funny is the year before we had been my uncle in Savannah, Georgia about their and he had a copy of a monthly magazine and I was flipping through their and I saw all they had a picture break no and he was advertising leader Joe Weiner, protein powder, you lose crude powders from the 80s and even for their own like I like a Hercules sword and I remember looking at and taken you know I need to start lifting weights and of course, only being about six at the time. You know my parents would let me work out that particular time. So after 40 year, I see the Russian nightmare on TV and just followed you ever said you know I you know can recount the feud with ferromagnetic TA you leading up to the summer of 86 were you on the title and that best-of-seven series went on the start. You face Rick flair. The main event and then the following summer with a they introduced wargames matches and I think that following July drop the US title the X auto you just continue to follow your career I would read article in a magazine. One time when I think it was your first wife, Mandy, Cookeville one of the one of the wrestling publications that article on that. So I was fairly up on that and just trying to follow you as much like the we have a mutual friend, Mike Mooney, M yes Mike would get me tickets to the show. They would come to town on occasion.

I never got to see you in person but I think Mike tried his best to try to keep up with you over the years and even when you want wrestling or on TV you know I would have to have you heard anything from the key that he would, of course, he would fill me in on whatever knowledge he had yeah yeah we see each other at Gloucester in Asheville. Different dear friend Bill Murdoch would host Brett Johnson actually Super Bowl quarterback for the Tampa Bay box was was the one of the host, Bill Murdoch hello still up there and Mike Mooney him was to always be there with this is lovely Bryden and us so mad, you refuse to give you a walk down memory lane right there. Well I am bad about from one to the exit exit next to the next and all incredible memories you, you do know your wrestling history well from document for me it was probably the best time of wrestling. I think I still try to watch a little bit today but I just think that from a perspective watching it now. I got for about 37 years. The number one.com because you are number one in the world titled around like their candy and I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day take somebody like a guy like Kelly Blanchard are on Anderson you know guys who were who were really good in the ring and who are really good on the mic and they were multiple time world champion, but they never got a run with the unit with the world title itself, and I was there with somebody that if they were wrestling a they would probably be multiple time world champion because they were great promos on the my had great work in the ring very believable characters and then you take a guy like Kelly Blanchard. I couldn't stand Kelly growing up with what you mean feet really did his job right on that aspect right back to that guy could generate heat like nobody else.

Yes yes and you know you could get under your skin. Real quick.

It was deftly different era. Most most fans called the golden era of wrestling and so you are you are spot on and in regards to that in and what want one quick thought on on Charleston there on King Street that building on the couch like they are another building on King Street. Every time we went we we never did took two members of Charleston. We never knew of the building was still good to be standing when we got there, I say that to say every time he walked in the building. There was like I don't know how many termites were in that building, but in the dressing rooms. There were like look like literally piles from termite dust from chewing gum like suspicious roof to hold up.

You know, long enough for us to have a match and then here's the other memory of Charleston like an infamous for me and from his memory is one of the cities that Jim Crockett promotions got a phone call from the sit at the colossal shop in Charleston tonight were going to kill him get back tied it back to yeah and so Crockett cycle will just beef up security. All I got. Thank you Jim for your confidence there. You know what Joe to your point of of how much eat totally had so much people love to hate us as well. So, what great memories to read great memories. While it is cute I would call off. I do want to give you got to ask a couple three questions here, and in addition to helping me walk down memory lane, but so what are we transitioning through throw out your first question for me okay, from a salvation standpoint was very particular trial or tribulation, or perhaps avoid missing piece which led you to seek out the Lord of the time that you did that. I think we share somewhat similar baptism dates okay well great question so you know, part of my stories not emitted totally like totally totally failed a drug test in the WW house and in that led him into a tailspin that at like 423 and the more one morning he woke up in had a vivid encounter would you know encounter with Jesus to transfer his life forever shall be so for me it wasn't like I came out of drug addiction. I was an alcoholic or you spent time in prison or any of those types of things for me it was what you said when I left wrestling at the end of 1992 made the decision at the beginning of the tail end beginning of 1993 walkway under my own terms. It was in that your pursuit are on a quest if you might say what holds life holds next for the cuticle up that I realize something was missing my women. I climbed the pinnacle of success in dressing up in a world champion different belts at different times, but all over the world but yet I'm not content I'm not happy, something still missing.

I was successful but I was unfulfilled and through just to some friends in other business ventures, but this Christian couple Dicken in Charlotte who invited me to to their church and stuff that I've never frequented a church, but I didn't grow up in church, but I knew the story of Jesus and had heard it numerous times, but that story never made the 18 inch strip for my had down to my heart and on that particular day 17, October 1993 the first time ever in that particular church was the I say my day of destiny that that I met Jesus at the altar encountered him on my knees in life is just never been the same sense and I went from I like to say from success and un-fulfillment to to a a heart fulfilled heart and and now for the first time I felt I had a real purpose to my life was here for a reason. Okay, I'm a bit of a gym rat my self. I try to get about five days a week out of every body that you are in the ring with you.

Would you say was the strongest guy questioning and by the way you you mentioned muscle and fitness magazine very familiar with that magazine. It takes me take my memory back to the very first magazine I don't know if you remember this one are knocked out cold iron man magazine may or may not help bodybuilding magazine and in so that stride age 12, started me on a path of of health and wellness, and that that still last to this day I still typically will get to the gym five days a week myself my know my workouts to change over the years. Of course in 50 years of of exercising and eating two are not trying to bulk up and impress anybody in this chip anymore. I just try to take care of this temple that God is given me right just be a good steward honor God with this body. At this point back to your question, the wrestling days there were certainly some strong guys. I wrestled the barbarian was one of you remember the barbarian yacht Mr. Paul Jones was his manager for a while and he teamed up with the warlord for a while and the idea number different characters.

Simpleton W. W. F. NWA but the barbarian was definitely one the road warriors, without question, animal and talk animal had legitimate 23 inch arms like that's like tape measure for real arms. In some women's waste and was one of the strongest guys around Hawk was pretty strong as well. A different type of strength in in a more reckless type of strength was Van Feder big Van Feder was recklessly strong and and actually would interest some guys in the ring actually injured me in my very last match in Winston-Salem right here with trip radio network is is housed right here in in Winston-Salem. So those are some of the stronger guys. Yeah, I think will have a legitimate 600 express what well I got somewhere when you're gym rat.

I know you not under normal bench wise, but I do remember he and I used to kinda compete if if you can visualize and I know you will know what this is a seated seated behind the neck, shoulder press of the short machines.

These are all Olympic right. The 45 pound Olympic bar in New York plates okay and that the heaviest I ever got for wraps seated behind the neck was 315 pounds for wraps animal, 365 pounds behind for wraps (for getting you say what I had gotten away with it it it girl oppressed unit match. One time he never again he did. He you know that was one thing I was not get you these press slams over certain things alike.

Well you do that to the Rossa nightmare what he caught me off guard and and he was kinda giggling as he was hold me up by me, lifted me up like a 10 pounds sack of flour you know and have depressed over said so my current wiseguy sizable my arms out like a like Superman and add just normally put your hands on the shoulder to can help support your weight and stabilize yourself. But unlike RA wiseguy sizable my hands out like Superman and let him fully course. He pressed me and him and him and Hawk had a good giggle about it but I just like me.

I'm like alright buddy never again you ever get that opportunity again so I was on guard for that point. Of course he never did. But he got the one shot it on yelp yet one more we do. We had to have one more question absolute is been great great conversation Rick. It was said that it Stargate 86 Magnum was supposed to go over where the world title.

I think I heard this meant. You know, maybe Jim Cornett podcast something and after that, I think it was said that you and magna were supposed to read that rivalry unit over the world title and perhaps exchange it back and forth several times and of course me know. Magnum had a terrible accident.

I think in October 1986 and you ended up in that spot Stargate up my personal opinion of that time was that they could given your run with the belt because I think Ann and I think even Dusty set it up until his last day when you attacked only in the cage that night. That was the biggest fan. Poppy had ever heard his entire career. I think you pretty pretty well over at that point, but it definitely had a run with the world title in late 8687, but was that it did you catch wind of any other plans that perhaps Magnum was supposed to win the title.

At that time and you and M were supposed to read emails rivalry thereafter is that something that you can expand on yelp II certainly can. He was days away.

Prior to the accident. He was days away from flying to New York and and sign the contract and securing that that that belt and the course you have the records you mention, I was thrust into the match and and obviously yacht most you were just hypothetical right speculation on what would've could've should've happened had he not had the rack now. We do know he he would have become world heavyweight champion God, and certainly with the chemistry he and I had and the matches that we had for the best-of-seven for the US belt and I mean the fan appeal how much the fans like yourself work were followers you of that storyline. It it it would've been relatively easy to continue that feud well into the future and as you said exchange that world heavyweight belt back and forth, back and forth, back and forth for legal maybe.maybe that not that many times but you know once or twice or whatever but I am that would've been it that would've just been a natural part of the storyline. It just would fit right and people would yell people to fully course fully bought into that and of course all that because the accident all that not you know, didn't didn't happen and it so you know that the fact that they never chose not to put it on the radio that night at Stargate in elusive whether they felt you don't. I just maybe, I just wasn't ready. Even though you know I was over and maybe I just wasn't ready to care.

I don't know know their decision-making of the reasons it for their decisions but nevertheless all you know, we wanted to do what we did and in generate tremendous cello business anywhere we went without the belt and so grateful. I'm just grateful to have a career had been in the ring with the guys I was absolutely accomplished a lot over short.
