We also have professionals in the medical field and inspirational speakers that are willing to help and give valuable information because awareness is vital. Transparency is needed and I believe we can be there for each other. As for me, my healing came from God that other forms of healing are presented as well to service everyone life can be very challenging. But always know we are not alone. That was one thing right by marshmallow.

It took a heart, let God's for mine to find its place the ball thing at the wrong place at the wrong times may be chasing all the wrong things. Most of our lives.

Some of us even experience every kind of loss that anyone can find and even though I've been wrong about a million times. The one thing the right. I cannot with God, my family and friends. I feel so blessed to finally get it right by per or enticing God in our lives which have instilled in us a giving spirit. It is then that one considers others as precious children of God, and I'm grateful to know what it is to have or have not let even more grateful that I can get back to those who are still struggling today so will focus on faithfully donating in the minutes and fundraising and today's special guest is Kathy Brown. Kathy Brown is the founder and CEO of high faith Institute and she is a specialist in nonprofit fundraising.

She is also the author of several books. Her latest is called business a spiritual matter what all leaders of the based nonprofits should know Caspi, thank you for being on the show we are now live on the care Margaret to really be here to talk about my favorite topic with fundraising and faith. And then we can nonprofits in their thinking. The honor is ours. Caspi.

Are nonprofits really making a big difference in the world. Oh, absolutely. Lives are being trained globally, bring it closer to home here in the United States over $120 billion was given to charity 2000 and based organization for your big role in back of that $427 billion that was given to charity. I was given to Eric so we know that people are generally people of faith are even more generous really are helping so many people in the world you think about it and think about our country. There are three factors to keep it going.

Government is in the nonprofit so that gives you an idea of the support, particularly to the United States and also global also considered Americans as a whole have a giving spirit and he believed that the typical American way of helping others through donations still alive. Definitely people are more bitter than ever and I want to caution people about being an informed giver because it there and the donations coming from everywhere you picture when we go to the supermarket, check out our groceries and they asked us to give to say breast cancer research. We bought clothes and were there at the counter and people you will ask would you like to give 2X charity, we are experiencing telemarketing at an all-time rate so that is because people are generous here, but we must be cautious before we give to charity out. Don't judges check out our groceries but check out the charity to because once you get there to the counter and impulse by when you ask this you a good person is only a couple of dollars, why not you have faith that the money that you getting is going to the right place. So what I'm saying.

Check it out. Wait, getting back shouldn't be an impulse purchase buyers beware physically about course of the few check things out first thing you want to wired wealthy do (Bill Gates and Robert Griffin always forgive those who million dollars mark. This getting out of impulse because they fit fairly out ways that we can talk about. So how about for us that for some of us that are not open ever anything like that and we don't have much to give. And here all the time markers and charity places are so many. How do we know what the legitimate charity donation place and how can we confirm that it for a good half okay number one, marketer calling you on your behalf of an organization them.

How much of my donation is going to the charity and several instances these telemarketing companies. Of course they are business so percent of your donation is going to the company and only 20% is going to the charity. That's not a good ratio and a veritable company as well. I thought I will not long in the news like a big company.

One of the company, but crossword Salvation Army. I don't remember which one it was here and there large rent because companies employ hundreds and hundreds of people who are just on the phone all day long, making the patient on behalf of them.

They could not afford bring that number people in his employee so great and contracted out but when you're on the phone with our how much of my donation is going charity and how much is going to you and they must answer the question for you.

Sometimes an operator any of not an operator but the provider and the supervisor will answer that question for you. Once you have that question answered.

You'll know how to proceed. Another way is to look up red flags and I'll talk about them, but I'll give you a chance at another question. Sure, I just wonder if they're obligated to tell you all the calls recorded just to make sure he. When you ask the question that they can transfer you over to a supervisor if they don't have the answer and that person can and at answer the question for you.

I recently saw I don't know the full name of it all with really authoritative voice calling on behalf of whatever it is and I walked. Can you tell me how you rated on. His navigator and hesitated, while what does that mean he didn't have the answer didn't want to answer it down to knowledgeable so like I didn't oh you don't hang up. Yeah if you're on the phone for you right your darling Sandy. We know what's what's next. What's a good percentage. What was good percentage that you would suggest.

Like you, so what percentage goes to the charity work as a telemarketer. What do I not want to hear what you want to hear 8020.

I want to hear more like 50-50 and be thought of these okay. Something that I could read with what I would at that point I would do board I would just say thank you very much and give to the charity directly myself. I tell you this conversation definitely because I want to know if you can believe in smaller charities more than bigger charities and their what's that we can go to know what good ones not against you. I have in this figure continues on the brown after the shortening life can bring many difficult situations domestic violence addiction is poverty and even sexual abuse by your loved ones. The issue is not stay there, but to overcome all obstacles been shouldered with the love of God, your husband and your family. You can succeed in love is the answer.

God is the key word reveals baby combos life, a warrior who didn't give up and achieve the dream of her life. You can get to know more about her at her story on God is the key word.com or buying her book on Amazon.com go down to say me and we go to bed angry know everything will be away from is some changing just welcome back to the sale.

For those that are tuning in many combo and is secure your life on your media and also on Facebook and the patient will be available at the podcast search for any podcast downloads are pickier that was time INF we all have equal regrets and I have often apologized for the stress just the same way bothering you. That's not what I meant to do and he knows I love them to death that even if people break down and we go to bed angry. I know everything will be all right. A good few times I promise to change. Nonetheless, he was always there waiting. He knew all I needed was time just in the same way got God loves us even more and his timing is perfect know that we are looking for things, the subject of look perfect either. Sorry.

God's timing is perfect. We are talking to Gatsby Brown about myths that exist around donating Gatsby.

Why do you suppose God approached me the poor and the weary dissenters. Those who needed him most that he not say Blessed are you were poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven so Caspi do faith based charities, operation in the same way as other nonprofits have a higher calling because report bed and perfected that gave a mandate to border info five faith-based nonprofit they are addressing every issue from the cradle to the grave from daycare, domestic violence can't feeding the hungry, clothing, though the flow of counseling shelter house all the way, this care could rate-based organizations are doing great work and have great mission of the spiritual matter what all faith-based nonprofit know because I have been exposed to craft in the nonprofit world through both my unwritten family philanthropy in my own practice and I you nonprofit for some nonprofit focusing so much on their not paying much of the authorization as result is not aired well. One could be.

And, we are required in the faith-based organization operated excellence. As unto the Lord for the book. It deals with how to build a good how to mount a capital campaign with step-by-step instructions on how to because after all, with the faith-based operation faith-based nonprofit nonprofit have a Band-Aid by the government to operate weight 501 God don't want to make sure that your matter to make sure that planning done correctly, that all fundraising is also done decently in order to experience a chapter on an order that so faith-based organizations that aura operated by loving and love God and I believe that they operate, they should operate according to the law and they should operate at a higher standard. According to God's law a think that when it comes to saying God in your life you want to do things right, and I think that's what could make the big difference in other nonprofits and could you also tell me Gatsby when it comes to faith based nonprofit charities is what part of it goes towards the charity as opposed to the business and the structure what percentage well because the minute, some people with great 25 II simply disagree with that is the professional in the nonprofit sector.

It costs money to raise money and those development professionals that are part of the organization must be paid equitably. You must keep the lights on the rent paid or the mortgage or whatever it is there. There, the overhead responsibilities must be taken more seriously than they had in the past. Nonprofit does not mean you should be poor nonprofit means that you are operating according to omission and that you're not accountable to shareholders you accountable to donors you can help others if you don't forget to help yourself right to the point that you made before nonprofit nonprofit really want to do the right thing, but do they know how to do the right thing. That is why resources like my book are very helpful in learning about what the right thing to do. That's that's wonderful and I suppose that if if there's there's not a charity one know that it's faith-based. They'll make themselves known. Then other nonprofits that that's good to know that's really good to know that we should ask what percentage goes to faith-based and nonprofits and what to expect exactly all faith-based nonprofit by themselves they really do like Salvation Army. They are unapologetically faith faith-based and other we are. I have been a part of situations and planning where there been some by board members, but we shouldn't mention faith this because I don't love gift to us want to have a broader donor base. I call that pandering you are proudly yes because he will make room for our gift yet give me what you think is going to the future in as far as taking care of important issues to the government will be more involved. All charity work will corporations will step in more well the great question locks. There is a report that comes out every June from getting USA that we professional fundraisers wait to get this report every year with baited breath and what it showed in the last report is that corporations give it about 5% for $427 billion and I talked about at the top of the hill that was given to charity in 28.

Only 5% Corporation 15% from foundation and 8% from bequest.

Then there was the 69% from individuals that all of the bequest. The family foundations that are a part of that foundation getting in the individual mode of the charitable giving United States comes from individual then there is another another statistical piece, a high net worth study done by US trust and Billy family philanthropy they have found that in answering up by asking a lot of questions that people believe that they can more by investing in the nonprofit they could do that and they have will be right back after a short range and will continue talking with Kathy Brown, the where back. Thanks for joining us I'm Amy capital and this is the key here is to lessen your radio every Saturday at 1 PM Eastern or through our app, which soon will have an app. First sense that was Flickr by now. Run, I think of the start, it echoes up a spark and I remember the magic explicitly and I look in my heart there's a truck in the light still Flickr up the hope that you first gave to me. I want to keep. Remember the start when Jesus appeared in a dream to tell me I can come to him that was the spark that ignited electricity my heart.

He was a light in the chart that I always remembered the flicker of hope he first gave to me that I want to keep Jesus that left and right you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Most of us have a hunger of helping others. Caspi daily prayer made a huge difference.

I wondered what to do with it and will be going with the spiritual matter is creating a daily devotional faith-based leader and a woman on a mission for faith in fundraising because of my faith and God knowing how hungry people are for information can do better is driving me feel small voice within me that the keep saying go and do this. This is my will for you is a driving force here is what brings us the reality and helps us see things for what they really are you having surely you experience working in the areas nonprofit industries to Washington National Opera and also for faith-based organizations heaped on them both. Where does it seem that people are more generous and why people are more generous in giving to Ruben because they have Anderson of belonging in that victory. Once again, remember that 9% of individuals that I talked about and then how large percentage of those individuals giving to religion the still play a huge part. Unfortunately, we are being we have to pay. Something that is growing called the non-talking about capital Catholic nuns were talking about you know any those young people who are more and more unaffiliated with organized and they believe they are spiritual and they don't need to be part of the church in order to live until we have to pay. Young church, though, have been turned off by various things that have happened within our sector. One of the things you mentioned prayer chapter in my book all prayer changes things. And so this chain and with regard to your question on generosity with the tax reform law that was put into place. The of giving that your and if it is really concerning because without having to itemize on the fact some people are not. They don't have the same give it back into the year people would give because they won't be able to point on effective tax reform and eight in the non-itemization that doesn't have as much feeling hoping that your full generosity and in the light should be an end to give again.

Why do you suppose some people are hesitant in getting welcome. On the motivation from people here in the number one reason people don't give it because they want at but after being asked some people. I'm not sure that the monies going in the in the right way they haven't been asked by the right person, but mainly people do not give back and make a difference in the world in the main, but they get go through the steps of understanding what charity is all about, and I want to talk about the red flag for just a minute if it if the charity is not recognized by the IRS go on IRS.gov. Going to the nonprofit that and plug in the name of the charity. If it is, you should be able to see something called a 990. Every charity is recognized by the IRS half submit a 990 by law, be able to see the board you how much money they spend a lot of information that is in the talked about this a little earlier, more than 50% is going to administrative costs.

You don't want more than 50% going that you wanted to go to program another red flag is you can only go there number of organization in the nonprofit one is called guide.

Another one is called charity navigator and there are others, the better the hero is also a nice check and it's a great way to check charity navigator. They give our and guide our the charity has to submit it. Information depending on the kind of information that is missed, the charity is rated Ron silver, gold or platinum which is the highest want to make sure that highly rated and highly that the organization that you like thoroughly check out the website if there is no indication of result in a whole lot of activity you want to know how many people were asked to help look for actual number. I saw a charity that I had claim they were branding on Abaco Island about to go and with the food and supplies, but no one on Abaco for all and all were in Miami another thought of the country because they had Abaco but that he will say we brought in a number of tons of food yet X number of the water bottle water supply to go to who did it help the fees of the kind of thing again to go to yet you want to make sure that it felt not activity, not just saying we went to we went to Haiti, for example, and we had a missionary trip and we went there only people as a result of that trip. How many people or help look for actual number. All these websites that you can end this information that you've given us.

I find extremely helpful and we will have it on our website because somehow I believe that if people have to the education they know that it's legitimate that it's going to good police for a good purpose. I think people are more than willing to give back to doing return because there is it not one of us that have not helped in one way or the other, for which we can help someone else that is so true by the great live with it all say even though Ben is more thorough culture the nation that we call the United States. We all have a common good.

That brings us together and the love of humanity and Patrick Calandra. What steps that you are, I believe I whenever someone gets an justice for the right reason, not expecting anything in return, not even to be recognized. It comes back and better ways and you can in action.

It doesn't even have to be monetary. A convenient way so you think possible. Well, I totally agree with you about that. Volunteers are needed by many many organization people who are willing to serve on the board which is so important building of the board of an organization has tremendous value because it actually the life of the organization depend on the board through the board just as it is, it means that the life of the organization will depend on the strength of the board. The board members were coming. Sometimes it takes a family that continued talking with you and I need to have here on 31 more life can bring many difficult situations domestic violence addiction is poverty and even sexual abuse by your loved ones.

The issue is not stay there, but to overcome all obstacles been shouldered with the love of God, your husband and your family. You can succeed in love is the answer.

God is the key word reveals baby combos life, a warrior who didn't give up and achieve the dream of her life. You can get to know more about her enter story on God is the key word.com or buying her book on Amazon.com where back into being with Mimi capital and this is the care you can listen to the cure. Every Saturday at 1 PM Eastern on your radio. I think here or social media where available on Facebook or lead us a podcast that was like some by Harry styles you know you are a child of God. I know on going back. We are made in the likeness of Christ we are meant for great things.

We all have that spark in our hearts. We are meant to shine bright and step into the light. But God is light and the way we are joined by Kathy Brown, the nonprofit myth buster. It was said in the Bible.

Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh those of us who have been through hardships we tend to appreciate doing things right casting.

How can you tell if a nonprofit is well-run once again very important to look at the board corridor with Mike look good. Board members something about vendor should be bio of each board member that is where you beginning because sometimes nonprofit organizations. If the board they deserved what they need.

Thought of harsh and this brought organizations have maybe reviews are anything like that people thought see the donations are people that have donated before and things like that.

I know that a lot of us. We tend to look at reviews you can look at reviews and once again look at charity navigator and also look at guide star which will have a lot of information on how the organization is viewed, the Better Business Bureau, if there been any complaints and unresolved that will show up there as well. But when you go on the website of the organization.

Their financial goals and have an annual report if you can look at the financials and helping the organization I had trained for three dragons over a five year period. You don't want to deal with that for now because they're not a stable organization like that that are indicated. I see okay donations to charities tease mostly coming from millionaires and billionaires or from small donors are another great question Amy average amount of giving is about $2000 over years. Time from individual so you know that that is nothing near what billionaires and millionaires are getting but that is making up the bulk of that $427 billion that was given to charity so you question is it average folks just like you and me are getting back officially because we believe in the need to give back and make all. Maybe that's why somebody say Jesus God. Blessed are the poor because you know you and growing up I heard money is the root of all evil and maybe there's some truth to that.

It is when well that we turn to God the most and then were comfortable. We sometimes forget about him. Well go put this corrected.

The love of money is not the sum that our son is the root of all evil. And because the money people will do some pretty awful thing and I felt the why the heck they think is in place to make sure in our our cloaking is, no matter your faith every nonprofit theater at talking about the mission you don't yes. For example, well she's not poor and he's doing great things. Team Tebo develop a pair yeah you guys know about me know he has children that are born with Down syndrome men that have disabilities and stuff like that because that's yes sure yet very very generous and spirited not come from the heart. You can tell dad. Yeah, absolutely. And their leading others like him and he's got volunteers so even if you don't have money you can volunteer some of you doing something worthwhile. And anytime you helping someone else or at least that you feel helpful.

I think it is very true. And people like that who are role model who kind of fire other people you can do that I can do X on my own level and field like a generosity really makes it different with you.nothing.getting.

I don't want people to take away that they should stop getting all me give but just go down a bit to do your research and think it, and also we can get inspired by others.

What should leaders of nonprofits.

No wall once again. They should know how to put together a plan different between the granular operational plan to know that because grant is the organizational roadmap take a trip from from Miami to California without a map writing money What I of course is what the strategic plan.

God give you a roadmap of how the organization in the direction help though. This is what nonprofit know all the spiritual matter is available on Amazon go there and take a look there question questions and act after every chapter.

For example, have their operating data, faith-based areas are practical why the bake sale will never be enough banks so their beginners also for both Beth and I packed endorsements and several leaders have read the book already and they have come back with feedback like you even for veteran like me I'd learned something so for every nonprofit leader who is interested in serving excellence, as unto the Lord's SP just a few minutes left in the show. Would you like to say something else to our listeners also talk about effective nonprofit should like a nonprofit and act like a bit very very important one. You nonprofit very well be clear about mission.

Be transparent with donors about how where the money is going and something called the donor Bill of Rights that you don't know how important they are and what they are pretty terms of knowledge about so just think like nonprofit good in making a difference in the world. Act like a bit okay. And supposing you have your heart in the right place but you didn't know how to go about it is the websites were a bit in your book that could that could help them and that leadership role. The book spiritual matter will give you everything from on how to run a nonprofit out of my heart make a difference for nonprofit like my brain on what I know and what I know come from very very good place to start the book both dad and I have about 99 that are part of the right grant proposal. The fund, and if anybody has any questions.

Also questioned me. What about after life-giving like ways people can donate and leave things to charity, when they pass on as opposed to yet mean there's ways to do that right I can and donate inheritance here success the glory I will. There are Tron charitable trust be set up.

If a person has a donor it. I on foundation that can be done. All part of what we call plan and is what the high level that anyone can give in the nonprofit sector by taking your resort. After I'm gone.

I hear of what you of the mission and take care of the things that are important to me in my deepest interest so with that you should confer with your wealth advisor for that and also with your banker, your lawyer to make sure that in work with the organization to make sure that your gift is exactly what you wanted to be whether the life insurance charitable renewal will request or any other estate planning mechanism Friday are minis because he can take your money with you Ryan.

You cannot but were almost done. Gatsby, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you for being on the show today. It's been a pleasure to have you welcome. I love the conversation Amy and your crew there will work. Thank you very very much and thank you. The great Wanda and thank you Jasper for helping with the sounds it is important that people can hear us for more information.
