As this program.com other side of Lisa Williams was in Australia. She's the mother of a special needs child, and author of the new book. Hope wins overcoming feelings of hopelessness, special-needs families and she's joining us from Canberra, Australia. Did I say that right because I do have a southern accent along with my American accent and I will mangle words easily. Canberra is the capital of Australia.

You think I could be able to say it but here I am glad to have you. Lisa first off it is springtime where I am in Montana, Northwest US, but is auto where you are getting ready to be. Is that correct Larry also runway heading into into Highway, Paul, on the other side of actually coming out about LI lame now and so we got a lot of rain and fire out, and asked ring and coming into helping Terry is not what we normally would experience safe and a lot of flooding here in Australia. We've gone from one disaster to the next restart of the spies went into pandemic nabbing dealing with some terrible floods Nottingham brought about our nap Christ in particular and Southeast Queens land sales like you because it had a brief go of it.

I hope this could be a calm, peaceful autumn for you will loose talk about your family's journey. You have a son who has autism is 21 years old. You also have two older children and your family's walk-throughs, challenges, what surprised you about this journey.

I think that may apprise kind of life that I had planned myself to talk about being sidelined in my book and feelings of feeling I get a little bit G8 that I had types of plans. One thing I write United paid a with you as I write some of your story is actually a bachelor of self and was in and I was going down a performance career with my sleep playing and my music and when this happened the first chapter of the book I talk about it was like day the music died and have as a challenge because at one point I actually have life down my instruments being challenged by your Jenny that Alma will be picking up. I'm so glad to hear that because flautist are wonderful musicians will steeply besides the flu little bit and I and I was thinking and a tiny bit of guitar, no clarinet or piccolo LIA clarinet. I gave it a guy that I haven't. I didn't expect much. It's encouraging to hear that you picking up your food because I think it's a wonderful gift of God to have music that helps express what's in our souls as caregivers for me music is been a great respite oasis to deal with my journey as a caregiver and the feelings that come out of it. Hans Christian Anderson said were words fail. Music speaks and I bet you've got great music yet to come out of you what other things of surprise you about yourself in this surprised me how much I could develop my voice and like to be able to think about things and be real about circumstances that I never thought I would be able to be typed in and honest about because Ellie and the Jenny I wanted to keep things hidden and I didn't want to be face the reality of flat circumstances where becoming and as I've booked through this journey of being output to live in reality and not in denial and embrace this Jenny and find good things in this Jenny and hype in this Jenny and a richness that family relationship.

It surprised me how often opportunity have a voice of the people might know about express their voice and help them find their voice.

It surprised me how much Clay's have family relationships have become.

And just that and me. What could seem to be a really hopeless situation that there is hype and also I growing spy much closer in my pistol walk with Jesus.

As a result, as I flat him into that struggle, I guess, to pretty something of what and and to shine throughout circumstances. So I think that's what's also surprised me how when we really drive that way that God can just type same type of content into something that hopeful. It's what he does. Killing out-of-state Bolo for your older children little bit you have a daughter and older son.

How have you been touched by what you and your family become cohesive around this year's been married a long time in the divorce rate in most couples with any type of disability is almost 90%. What are some things that have touched your heart that you've observed the two witnesses to lecture well. We've just said that we really had to be really relevant honest about what our reality and our family walls because I do talk about this in the book. I point is that family was tearing each other apart and we actually struggled with toxic patterns of alighting towards one another and what I observed was that I started my iron Jenny of healing and went to get help and my husband did as well. Separately, and as we processed out trying my husband and I separately and then to get out with God and the people God putting our lives that actually had a flower in effect all the children. It was an easy.

They had there are significant struggles but three that I could say my husband and I struggling. Well, when I say struggling.

Well, I want to minimize that this was a zero way. Glory story and I say that at the end because it has been struggle and there were times we didn't know it would make it, but by being real role and honest with the people put in half that God gave us to help us in accepting the help and being real with our children and I could see us chatting to God by 2 x 10 to the Lord and have involved came in processing their pain and it is actually that cliché that says family that price. Together stays together and has seriously pain our story that today my all the kids will say mom will you pray for me are all right tense. I'm praying for you and twist about waste guy. We are not a perfect family box we family the following Jesus and include him in absolutely everything through thick, wealthy, and in the tough times and in the better times when this exact row to be there's no quick fix. There is no solution to these things are just better way of coping and living with this more peacefully its work. We can't change it with can't cure, but wouldn't because these are what would you say to yourself, you been doing with this for some time. Go back to the moment you get the diagnosis with your son and all the feelings and so forth came out of it. What are some things that you would say to that universal police and other young mothers things that you work through this process to stop striving. I think coming out of the performance music background. I think that was that striving that desire to conform to do well to perfect and I wanted to be a really good special-needs mom and as I look back at this book that are written, and I even look at how the tying of my second book which would be high-profile sourcing law haven't completely decided on the title.

I can say a different may override ready writing my second book because I'm lining to rest tomorrow in Christ and trust team on the Jenny and tonight I that I don't have to have it all together.

I don't have to have managed all of the therapists and finances ends all the things that guy with running a special-needs family, but that you know I can actually just let go and let God and trust him to move mountains that just same impossible to believe in the natural and to not base.

I pent up about that and just to take the pressure off because like he said it is what it is and coming to that point of pace and acceptance and to not resist and fight all the time to want a different life or to want things to be different from how they I think putting lay weighs you down has an impact on your health as a caregiver and can even put a blocking yard with God because you continually feeling crossed or resentful. All these other feelings when he's just saying come to me about your arrest in May of copies. I love you and I want to be able to do life with you in any circumstances will sooner there's there's a singular live but perfection is the end we have the good thing for us as caregivers. We try so hard to be perfect, but it's not going to be perfect. It's going to be messy at times very messy known as a musician. This is been a principal for me when I was studying formally in classical music. Everything had to be spot on. You get with it are switched over to jazz improvisation.

Is this what are stop trying to perform a piece of music in a rigid throughway just started expressing playing music was a different mindset for me it is not that I want played sloppy because I don't just want to be able to express play and let it out, as opposed to make sure that I rigidly perform something.

I think the music in us is more important than the perfection were trying to demand of ourselves. Michael J Fox is a great statement that he believed once perfection discuss business excellence is ours and I found that we could be excellent. What we do is up with these unreasonable demands as caregivers for us to be perfect.
